Biography

Tom Usher is art director of Harper's Bazaar, the current PPA Consumer Magazine Of The Year.

Tom began his career at a creative agency specialising in fashion. Working on a range of projects including press packs, point-of-sale and packaging for brands such as Principles, Oasis, Jaeger and Gina gave him a salesman's perspective to go with his award-winning eye for design. Tom then began freelancing on Vogue creative before becoming commercial creative director of its stablemate GQ, where he worked with clients such as Diesel, Moët & Chandon and Mercedes on advertorial pages and supplements. His chance to design pages with page numbers – to cross over into editorial – came when he was headhunted to redesign FHM, then the biggest-selling UK men's title. Having spectacularly fulfilled his brief to bring upmarket design values to the male mass market, he was asked by the editor to follow him to his next magazine, Arena, where he continued to work with some of the world's best photographers and illustrators. After only a few months as art director there he won Best Designed Magazine at the Magazine Design Awards and was nominated in the following two years for Designer Of The Year at the PPA Awards. One of his last covers for Arena, featuring a shot of Jude Law by David Bailey, won Campaign magazine's Cover Of The Year Award.
